Peak demand, wind, solar and back-up power / energy usage and storage capacity calculator

For the specification and design of renewable energy electricity generation systems which successfully smooth intermittent wind and solar generation to serve customer demand, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 52 weeks a year.

Adopting the recommendation derived from scientific computer modelling, the tables offer rows of previously successful modelled system configurations – row A, a configuration with no back-up power and rows B to H offering alternative ratios of wind and solar power to back-up power.

The recommended energy storage capacity is about 90% of one day’s average wind and solar energy generation.

The tables’ columns consist of power and energy variables.

A cell value can be adjusted according to the design criteria and then all the other table values will be recalculated, spreadsheet-style.

The wind and solar power generation Capacity Factor (C.F.) percentages can be adjusted too.

The energy generation percentages from wind and solar power can be adjusted, either directly or according to the latitude of the system.

A configuration text page for a row which has been adjusted and designed satisfactorily can be opened for text output by clicking on the row’s “TXT” icon in the “Open text page” column.

The recommendations derived from modelling are only specified to 2 significant figures so take with a pinch of salt any apparently third “significant” figures in the numbers output in the configuration text pages.

Interesting info....I learned a lot on your Blog. Many EU countries have invested heavily in this area and it seems to be working out well. I hope to see more counties continue down this path and other renewable options.

Wow! That is a very generous comment!
Thank you!
It is such a relief finally to find a forum where the administrator has understood my post as I intended it to be - my sincere attempt to help. :geek:

What's been invested in renewable energy in the UK and the EU has been most welcome and has hinted at what is possible but I don't think the scale of our investment has typically matched as a proportion of GDP what, for example, China has been investing.

I would like to see the EU and EU member country governments, including the UK, using their powers to borrow from their own central banks to pay for what people on both sides of the pond are now calling a "Green New Deal" - massive public investment in renewable energy projects, that doesn't put the financial burden of energy transition onto the ordinary consumer or tax-payer, but which creates a lot of new, well-paid green energy jobs, ending the austerity approach of fiscal conservatives which has not served ordinary citizens well.

Change to a sustainable energy future is not going to be cheap nor quick, but I agree with must start now. The current administration in the US is clearly not for this ideology. But that too can change in a few years. Doing the status quo is easy, but all that does is push the issue down the road, and will make it more difficult and more expensive to achieve what every scientist has been saying for years is that we must find a way off of fossil fuels and soon. It is a limited resource, it has damaged our planet and continues to do so at an alarmingly accelerating rate. But, we are in the "ME" generation now, where they feel this is not an issue for me, someone else can deal with it later. Unfortunately, if WE don't start that change now, we could potentially create a point of no return. I sure hope not, but someone other than the current US leadership is going to have to lead the way and hope that we can catch up in a few years when things change.

Along with the leadership of the states and cities of the US who have committed to the transition to renewable energy, this is what I would call "US leadership".

The US "Green New Deal" as reported on in my blog.

Atmospheric pollution and global warming is indeed an issue for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez 😍 and her colleagues and they are up for dealing with it now!

In the UK, we have our own leadership visionaries such as Caroline Lucas 😘 Green Party MP.

The British Green New Deal as reported on in my blog.

Not forgetting Greta Thunberg 🥰, the plucky Swedish teen who has been inspiring climate protests by young people.

When you have few followers, maybe only your nearest and dearest and even they aren't sure what it is all for, "what's the point?", when everyone else is doubting you, some are ridiculing you, calling you "crazy", wanting the police to move you on, long before you've become famous and are being invited to address large meetings and appear on TV - then.

To my mind, that's when true leadership is the hardest to offer but which will prove to be ultimately the most valuable kind of leadership.

That's why I don't get put off when I try to post in forums where I get trolled or banned as an alleged "spammer" because it is it my duty to keep looking for the forums like this one where I will get a hearing.

Thanks Thunder7ga! (y)
